Since every product I make available comes in your choice of sixteen different colors, it is interesting to analyze the color selections customers have made.
As a manufacturer, this data is important to manage the inventory of color filament used in the 3d printer.
When I started seven weeks ago with no historical data to go by, I had no clue what colors customers would be choosing. At that time, I believe I had blue, white, green and red ABS filament in stock. This material is not cheap, so going out and buying a roll of each color was out of the question.
So I waited for the first order.... Wouldn't you know it, the very first order was for a PINK doodad! those first orders where a challenge because the correct ABS color filament had to be ordered to satisfy the doodad order.
Roll forward seven weeks and things are pretty predictable which makes doodad order fulfillment much quicker.
I use the 80/20 rule for color choice analysis. It is also known as the Pareto principle.
In 1906 an Italian economist named Vilfredo Pareto realized that 80% of Italy's land was owned by 20% of the population. Then he saw this ratio work in his garden. 20% of his pea husks produced 80% of his peas.
It applies to all things.... 80% of productivity comes from the 20% that actually work hard and bust their behinds.
It works for me in metal detecting also. 80% of my best finds come from just 20% out of the hundreds of places I have hunted. The honey hole, the sweet spot, the nectar sector.....Sorry I got carried away there.
The following chart shows what colors are popular. To apply the 80/20 rule, find 80% on the right vertical axis, project a line to the left until it intersects the green curve. Now project a line down until you run into a color. There is an 80% chance that the next doodad ordered will be either Orange, Florescent Yellow, Red,
PINK, or Yellow.
But predicting color selections at the end of the day is much like the weather forecast. Now watch the next order come in for a dusty fawn chartreuse doodad.
I really do appreciate your comments, suggestions and feedback.
